'Pirates & Gypsy Queens' series
'Father of the Bride'    'Flowering Gypsy Queen'
"As I felt the images on my tableware screaming to become three-dimensional, the series 'Pirates and Gypsy Queens' emerged.

Most of these sculptures hang on the wall; some are free-standing. All are richly painted. They have grown into life-size figures composed of symbolic body parts (musical instruments, flowers, footwear) which I hope reveal and provoke the essence of their character and spirit."
'My Baby Just Cares for me...'    'Tango Apassionado'

'With a Song in my Heart' series
"Each piece has its own presence, personality and subplot, which I discover and enhance along the way. They are not planned — there are no preliminary drawings. They are about being in the moment, with the Music, with the Clay. Then returning to them, weeks later, to Paint.

Each work is named after a piece of music performed by a specific musician. Whenever possible, the music accompanies the work."

Because I, myself, am in such a state of 'Getting to know you' with this series, I felt compelled to pass that along (via ribbons and objects) while still leaving each piece open to interpretation.

Subtext re Ribbons: a device used by Frida Kahlo to inform her paintings, inspired by Mexican (retablos) -- tin paintings which describe through image and text 'A miracle happened here'.

This body of work was genuinely created with 'A Song in my Heart'.

'I'm a Dreamer'    'Deer Frida'    'Blue Liberty'    'Inner Waves'

'Duets' series
"Each of these sculptures is a Duet expressing our multi-faceted personalities.

These sculptures are composed of two faces. One is looking to the heavens with a sense of longing, trust and wistfulness symbolizing the inner spirit's need to voice life's emotional complexities — the act of transcending ourselves to feel at home within ourselves.

The second face looks straight ahead, facing life squarely with a willingness to confront, assess offsetting turbulence, harmony and discord.

My quest is to harmonize the inner self to better navigate the journey outward. While working on these pieces I listened to the lyrics of Johnny Mercer and Cole Porter, the voices of Eartha Kitt and Ibrahim Ferrar. I want the sculpture to sing - to be descriptive of the process of my journey through the act of creation - to radiate their song and my soul."

'The music of the universe around me...'

'There is not another human in view, but us two...'

"Bottled Spirits" curated by Mary Ellen Furlong at the Kentucky Gallery of Art and Design in Louisville, Kentucky

"Kentucky is famous for its bourbon distillers and its craft artists. This exhibition combines the two as artists from across the U.S. and around the world showcase their work alongside the work of our Kentucky craftspeople. This eclectic group of artists has created vessels in which to store and from which to serve bourbon, wine or other types of spirits. These works range from the functional to the purely decorative and reflect each artist's unique creative personality, style and approach to the subject".

Suzy was invited to participate in this exhibit in 2001 and 2002.

This exhibit inspired Suzy to create a series of "Spirit Bottles". > more
